WHRB Awaits Radiation Decision Before Altering Its Present System

Station WHRB, faced by a possible FCC ruling which would limit its broadcasting under present facilities, will not make any immediate changes in its broadcasting system, Station President Geoffrey M. Kalmus '56 said yesterday.

His statement followed an announcement that WYBC (the Yale station, has revised its broadcasting facilities in compliance with present FCC regulations. WYBC said last night that it believes it will be broadcasting legally even if the proposed limitations are put into effect this year.

The limitations, directed at "spurious radiation devices" such as diathermy machines as well as college stations which transmit via wiring systems, would severely "hamper our operations," Kalmus said. But WHRB can certainly continue broadcasting under its present setup until the end of the current academic year.

The only change now planned by WHRB is improvement of broadcast quality in certain weak spots, such as Eliot House.

No decision on the FCC proposal is expected until next spring. Deadline for briefs against the scheme has been advanced to January 3, 1955, from August 15.
