The varsity soccer team toppled M.I.T. from the unbeaten ranks with a 4-1 victory yesterday. In a game that frequently degenerated into rough and sloppy play, the Crimson's fine defensive work stood out, assuring the varsity of its third win.
Fullbacks Hugh Sargent and John Hadik cleared the ball well and coordinated excellently backing each other up, while the two goalies, Lindsay Fischer and Elliott Finakelstein, made several good saves.
Maurice Toro, who had replaced Grey Hodnett at center forward, got the Crimson's first goal in the second half to tie the score; M.I.T. had tallied in the opening quarter. Stacey Holmes put the varsity ahead shortly after Toro's score, on a hard, low shot.
Because of a back injury, the team's leading scorer, Hodnett, could not play the entire game, but he should be fully recovered for the Amherst contest Saturday. His penalty kick in the fourth quarter, however, accounted for the third goal. And Charley MacVeagh added the final tally on a long shot that hit the top of the goal-post before going in.
Coach Bruce Munro commented that "the team would have to improve its short passing game if it's going to beat Amherst Saturday." The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the Business School field.
The freshman team stretched its unbroken streak to five games by overwhelming Tufts, 9-0, yesterday. Jaime Gutierrez and Ken McIntosh each scored three goals. Shad Tubman, however, the squad's leading scorer, injured his knee and will definitely be unable to play Saturday against a perennially strong Andover team.
