Varsity Soccer Team Wins Over Williams in Overtime

Mary Welss' second goal of the game gave the varsity soccer team a 3 to 2 overtime victory over Williams yesterday at Williamstown, Mass. The Crimson, after spotting Williams a two-goal lead in the first quarter, had come back to tie the game in the fourth on Welss' first goal.

Williams jumped off to a lead early in the game on Mike Quinn's goal after only 2:45. At 20:10, Gerry Henson scored the second Williams goal, apparently setting the stage for a rent, as the Crimson attack up to this point had been disorganized.

Crimson coach Bruce Munro made no substitutions for the second period, however, and his starting lineup settled down. After 14 minutes of indecisive play, Grey Hodnett scored the first Crimson goal on a penalty kick, the second of a rough quarter.

The third period was scoreless, but the Williams team was definitely on the defensive. With four minutes gone in the fourth period, inside right Welss drew Williams goalie Dick Smith out and drilled the tying goal past him. Regular play ended with no more scoring, so the teams went into two five-minute periods of overtime.

In the first, the Crimson continually pressed Smith until, with 15 seconds left in the period, Welss scored again, this time on pass from sophomore left inside Hank Holmes. The second five minutes saw the frantic Williams team threaten goalle Lindsay Fischer again and again, but the Crimson defensemen, Hugh Sargent and John Hadik, cleared the ball each time.

Except for the first period, the varsity seemed to have improved its passing and dribbling over the Wesleyan defeat. The Crimson, now at the .500 mark with one victory and one defeat, will play Brown at Providence this Saturday.

The Yardling soccer team will open its season this afternoon on the Business School field against Exeter.
