Billionaire Investor Gerald Chan Under Scrutiny for Neglect of Historic Harvard Square Theater
Governor Christian A. Herter '15 yesterday stated in a special press conference that he had told President Pusey "some time ago" that Harvard should fire those members of the faculty who hide behind the Fifth Amendment.
Herter said he has communicated his attitude to Pusey more than once.
"I made known my views to President Pusey in writing and in person some time ago," he declared.
Herter--himself a prominent member of the University Board of Overseers--can take no hand in discharging those who refuse to answer questions about past communist activities since, as he pointed out, the Board of Overseers "does not have the power to take such action against communists and other subversives."
No Room for Subversives
The Governor, elaborating on his annual message to the State Legislature, said that there "is no room in Massachusetts government or education for the known subversive or for that doubtful character who seeks a shield, either in the Fifth Amendment to the federal Constitution or in provisions of equal effect in our own Constitution."
Simultaneous with Herter's statement it was learned that the state commission on Communism will hold its first real public hearing next week for the 15 witnesses who invoked constitutional safe-guards and refused to testify in closed sessions.
