Professor Morton G. White has been named chairman of the Department of Philosophy. He begins his term July 1, 1954.
Professor John L. Oncley was appointed Acting Chairman of the Department of Biophysical Chemistry in the Division of Medical Sciences of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on Dec. 1 and will hold the position for the remainder of the academic year. He succeeds the late Dr. Edwin J. Cohn.
White from CCNY
White is a graduate of CCNY and he received his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He was appointed an assistant professor in 1948 and was made a full professor during the past year. His publications include a volume on the background of John Dewey's instrumentalism and a book entitled "Social Thought in America." He has contributed articles to various journals and magazines on logic, ethics, and related subjects.
The philosophy appointment is a part of the department's rotational appointment system by which various members of the department are given the chance to head it. He succeeds Professor Donald C. Williams.
Oncley from Southwestern
Oncley, the new head of the Department of Biophysical Chemistry, is an alumnus of Southwestern College. He was appointed a research assistant at the Medical School in 1939 and became an assistant professor in 1943. He advanced to an associate professorship in 1946 and became a full professor in 1950.
The American Chemical Society gave him an award in pure chemistry in 1942; he has contributed many articles to leading professional journals.
Dr. Cohn, Higgins University Professor, had been head of the Department of Biological Chemistry from 1935 until his death last October.
