The January thaw has passed. Temperatures in Boston may drop to 12 above zero today as arctic air floats down south and east over the continent. Northern New England may shiver with 10 or 15 below readings.

The current nation-wide cold wave dropped temperatures as low as 40 below in Minnesota and 53 below in Montana. Yesterday, the leading edge of the cold air mass was in central Kentucky and western New York and was moving steadily toward the Eastern seaboard.
