The varsity hockey team didn't need tire chains to get moving at Lynn's North Shore Sports Center Saturday night. The Crimson whipped Dartmouth, 4 to 0, and thereby established itself as a definite threat to retain its Beanpot tournament crown tonight and tomorrow.
Coach Cooney Weiland's fast-improving sextet meets Boston University at 9 p.m. tonight in the second game of the second annual tournament at the Garden. Boston College and Northeastern meet in a 7 p.m. game.
The win over Dartmouth was important in many ways. It was the Crimson's first triumph in seven starts after dropping all six vacation games. It gave the sextet a running start in the Pentagonal league, since the game was the first of loop competition for both teams. It was sophomore goalie Charlie Flynn's first shut-out for the varsity.
But most significant was the fact that the triumph avenged a 5 to 1 loss to the Indians in the season's opener, and it could easily mark the turning point of the season.
Although the Big Green even used a Canadian, anathema on the road series, the 500 fans who weathered snow and ice to attend could see that the Crimson was clearly the better team all the way.
With Jeff Coolidge and Ed Mrkonich back at defense, and Dick Clasby thus moved to a forward post on the third line, the Crimson had little trouble in establishing an early lead, and blanking the Indians throughout.
Wing Ned Bliss put in the first two goals, the first with but 59 seconds remaining in the opening period, when he rebounded Jeb Bray's blue line pass behind Dartmouth goalie Gordon Russell.
The second came at 2:40 of the second period, after he missed a shot from the blue line and a rebound. On his third try, Russell fell to the ice, and Bliss lifted the shot over him into the nets.
A scramble in front of the Green goal resulted in the Crimson's third score, by Scott Cooledge, at 8:20 of the same period. Sophomore Joe Crehore scored the final tally at 12:28 of the last period
