Faculty Gets Six New Professors In Major Posts

Six new professors and associate professors have joined the permanent staff of the faculty of Arts and Sciences this year.

Bruce Chalmers, the new Gordon McKay professor of Metallurgy, will give three graduate courses in Physical Metallurgy and one in X-Ray Metallography.

An internationally known scientist, Chalmers was head of the Metallurgy Division of the British Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, England, before coming here.

Rene Jasinski, professor of French Literature, is an expert in the history of French literature, especially of the 19th century, Jasinski, who came her form the Sorbonne, will give French 122 and 123, French Literature in the Nineteenth Century, and a graduate course in Bibliography and Methods of Research.

The realm of animal behavior is the special concern of Donald R. Griffin '38, professor of Zoology. He is particularly interested in echolocation, the ability of animals such as bats and birds to navigate in the dark by mans of their sensitivity to supersonic sounds.

Roderick Firth, associate professor of Philosophy, will give Philosophy 3, an introductory course to the problems of philosophy and two other courses called the Theory of Knowledge and Types of Ethical Theory.

Reuben A. Brower, Professor of English and of General Education, will give Readings in English Literature Since 1890 and a Critical Interpretation of Literature.

In the spring term, Henry C. Hatfield '33 will join the Germanic Languages Department as an associate professor of German.
