"They did themselves up proud. They turned in good performances all the way down the line, and we had a chance of winning even going into the last event," crack coach Bill McCurdy said, after his team had taken a surprising third in the Heptagonals.
The varsity, led by Bob Twitchell's two victories in the hurdles--the meet's only double winner-scored 33 and 5/6 points, and finished behind first place Yale, 50 points, and second place Army, 38 1/2 points.
Twitchell, running on a hard track under good conditions, one of the few times this year, clocked a fast 14.9 in the 120 high hurdles, with sophomore Bob Rittenburg third. He turned in 23.8 in the 220 lows, with Rittenburg again third. And then he was anchor man on the third place relay team of Pete Curran, Herble Collins, and Pete Dow, in a race that new first place Army break the record and the Crimson miss the old mark by only three tenths of a second.
Machanic Surprises
Rittenburg himself had a busy day. Besides his points in the hurdles he took a fifth in the broad jump, just missed qualifying in the high jump, and ran on the mile relay team.
Sophomore Roger Machanic threw the discus 146 feet 11 1/2 inches for third place. This was his best performance of the season. The Crimson's Phil Pratt was fifth.
Other varsity scorers were Pete Dow, a strong third in the 100-yard dash after a bad start. Bob Curran took third in the hammer with a throw of 157 feet 1inch. Bob Mello cleared 13 feet in the pole vault for one of his best jumps this year, as he tied for third.
