Winthrop Wins Crew Race; Eliot Second in House Meet

By Michael J. Halberstam

First at the start, first in the middle, and first at the finish, Winthrop's powerful first boat (above) beat out a convincing victory over three other House crews yesterday in the finals of the annual intramural regatta. Eliot was two lengths behind in second, Leverett was about two lengths behind Eliot, and Kirkland was last, half a length behind Leverett. The winning time was 5:45.

The Puritans leaped ahead after the first ten strokes, and stayed over a length ahead for the body of the race, rowing at a fairly steady 31. Midway in the mile long race, Eliot made its challenge, taking the stroke up to a 35 and drawing within three-quarters of a length of Winthrop. When the stroke dropped, however, Winthrop pulled away again.

Stroke Otto Grote kept Leverett at a high 34 for most of the race to pull off a mild upset over a fast-finishing Kirkland boat. The Deacons were hampered by the illness of stroke Randy Harris, which forced Al Rieselbach from six to stroke and put coach Tom Hagoort in at six. Kirkland, sprinting at a 38, almost caught the Bunnies at the finish.

Eliot won the three-quarter mile race for second boats, with Kirkland second, Dunster third, and a neophyte Leverett eight last.

Winthrop Boatings-Cox, Frank Harding, stroke, Bob Terry; Paul Schaikjer, John Nash, Rod Park, Jeremy Paulus, Frank Kennedy, Ned Ames, and bow, Peter Duus.

Derrick Wilde '53 whipped his way to a one-length victory over strong but rough John Carnes 3L yesterday in the University Senior Singles championships. Wilde led all the way. Sam Hoar 3L war third and Hugh Hermann 3M fourth over the mile-long Basin course.

Steve Bolster won the finals of the University Compromise Sculls race, with Mike Halberstam second and Al Wilson third.
