Winthrop's powerful, precision crew will take on the pick of the House eights tonight over a one-mile course in the Charles River Basin. Kirkland, Eliot, and Leverett will test the Winthrop boat, but the Puritans are heavily favored. The race starts at 5:30 p.m.
Earlier this afternoon, trial heats will be run off in the University sculling championships. At six p.m. the House second boats will hold their first and only race of the season. Eliot, Kirkland, and Dunster are definitely entering boats, while Lowell and Leverett appear as probable starters. The Kirkland second eight is favored in this race, although Eliot has an excellent chance to win.
The Winthrop first boat has piled up more practice mileage than any of its opponents, most of it under the careful eye of Coach Kim Whiting. Bob Terry strokes the boat, which has had almost no changes in it since practice began early last month.
Eliot, last year's champions, put George Walcott in at stroke less than two weeks ago. The Elephants, coxed by Jarrin' John Pratt, are experienced, big, and could win, as could Kirkland.
