Ted Cooney became the first Harvard medalist in years Saturday afternoon as lie led the varsity golf team to a fifth place tie in the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships.
Cooney, the only Crimson player to reach the final round after Saturday's qualifying matches, shot a sizzling 144, par for the course, for the 36 holes. He has played in the number one position for the varsity all season, after spending most of last spring in left field for the freshman baseball team. He defeated John Riggs of Penn State one up Saturday, but lost to Ted Fehr of Yale 5-4, in the final round.
The Elis took first in the match, with a total of 590 points. Penn State was second with 601, and Princeton was fourth with 609. Fourth place Virginia finished two points ahead of the Crimson and Holy Cross with 617.
On the way down to the Intercollegiates the varsity lost to Holy Cross 5 to 1.
Freshman Win
The freshman golf team defeated Exeter over the weekend, 5 1/2 to 3 1/2.
Bob McAllister was medalist for the Yardlings with a 69 over the 18 holes. Both he and number one man Brook Stokes took their matches two up.
Dick Savrann in three, won his match 3-2, while four man Carl Burtt lost 3-2. Bob Stone at five lost 6-4. Tom Matteson won the other Crimson point, two up, in the number six slot.
