Conant Arrives in NYC, Will Visit Capital, Then College

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

James B. Conant '14, United States High Commissioner for Germany, arrived at New York's Idlewild International Airport yesterday for talks with President Eisenhower, Secretary of State Dulles, and West-German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

Conant, who is staying at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, will be on hand to greet Adenauer when the Chancellor and his party at New York today.

After his landing at Idlewild, Conant said that Adenauer is expected to visit the University on April 17, adding that he would accompany the West-German Chancellor on his visit to Cambridge.

In response to a newsman's query, Conant declared that he has seen no "dramatic changes" in the cold war in Germany in the eight weeks he has served there as high commissioner.

Skeptical of Quick Solution

He was skeptical of a "quick solution" of cold war problems, despite recent overtures of peace from Moscow. Even if an early truce is achieved in Korea, he said, "we would still have the Russians in Berlin, and we would still have the problem of Europe. We also would still have the Iron Curtain."

Conant said he would be in Washington for conferences on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but that he would make no formal report to Congress while here. He said that his stay would depend on the length of Chancellor Adenauer's visit.

Adenauer, who is accompanied by his 26-year-old daughter Lotte, and several military and diplomatic experts, has expressed intention to visit San Francisco and Chicago, as well as Boston. Conant will leave the Adenauer party after the visit to Harvard, and return to Germany. Adenauer will fly to Ottawa for a one-day visit to the Canadian capital before embarking.
