Amory Made CIA Deputy Director

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Robert Amory, Jr. '34, professor of Law, has been named Deputy Director of Intelligence of the Central Intelligence Agency, it was learned last night.

Amory has been with the Central Intelligence Agency since March, 1952, when he was granted a leave of absence from the Law School. He succeeds Loftus B. Bocker, who is resigning to resume law practice in Washington, D.C.

No Longer a Candidate

Usually reliable sources speculated last night that Amory's acceptance of such an important job in government virtually places him out of the running for the University presidency. Because of his background, age, and record, he had been prominently mentioned for the post vacated last January by James Bryant Conant '14, who resigned to become United States High Commissioner for Germany.

President Eisenhower last month had appointed Amory to the Planning Board of the National Security Council.

Amory is the brother of writer Cleveland Amory '39, author of "The Proper Bostonians" and "The Last Resorts."
