Varsity Tennis Team Meets Underdog Cadets at Home

By John J. Iselin

Jack Barnaby's depth-laden, high-flying tennis team takes on underdog Army this afternoon at 3 p.m. on the windy Soldiers Field courts.

At the same time, Corey Wynn's undefeated freshman squad will meet its first real test in visiting Exeter. The yardlings are favored.

Yesterday, the Crimson took booth varsity and Yardling matches at Brown.

The Crimson varsity frounced the service team, 8 to 1, in a howling gale at Army last year, and has the same team on hand to meet the West Pointers this year.

So far, the squad has lost only to North Carolina. The Crimson took four other matches on its southern swing, but twice fell before the Tarheels' "five big men." Back home, the team has preceded the Brown win with Victories ever Springfield and Bowdoin.

Barnaby says he is optimistic as usual, but expects Army's players to be stronger than indicated by last year's match. "I always expect a good fight from the service teams," he adds. "You can count on Army to give us a battle."

Number one problem on Barnaby's mind at this point seems to be the varsity's approaching match with Williams next Monday. The Ephmen boast in Dick Squires a national junior doubles quarterfinalist when he was a freshman in high school. And Squires will lead a team with talent perhaps matching the Crimson's.

The going should not be as rough against Army today, however.

Johnny Rauh, with his solid and smooth play, goes at number one for the Crimson. Power-stroking Charlie Ufford will be in the second sport, and Art French will be at three. At four goes Gene Mann, and at five, Don Bossart.

Haegler May Play Singles

Alex Haegler will probably be back in singles action today for the first time in over a week. He gave his recovering tennis elbow its first test yesterday in the doubles against Brown, and should play in the sixth singles spot today.

Number seven man, Dave Watts, who has won his matches with ease this week playing in Haegler's place, will take over the sixth spot again tomorrow if Haogler decides he is not ready.

For the Yardlings, Ham Graven as usual, is in the top spot. Brooks Harris will be at two, Conrad Fischer at three, and Martin Heckscher at four. At five, goes Bill Green and at six, Karl Purnell.
