Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
A Student Council committee is currently developing a plan which, if approved, would enable certain History, Government, Fine Arts and Music honors majors to study abroad during their junior year.
At present, only French majors chosen by the department can study abroad for credit--and then only in Paris. Committee head John W. Stokes '54 last night told of preliminary work toward extending foreign study to other departments and other countries.
Stokes and his committee are in the process of interviewing the faculty of the proposed departments, eliciting suggestions and criticism. They report generally enthusiastic support.
College Credits Granted
According to tentative plans, honors candidates with fluency in a foreign language could, with the approval of their department, study at an accredited university abroad for three credits. To obtain credit, grades would either be translated into their College equivalents or oral examinations would be administered.
The committee is drawing up a prospectus which will be submitted to each department involved. Department approval must then be okayed by the administrative Committee on Educational Policy.
Stokes said that many foreign universities want to enroll Harvard students and would conceivably set up scholarships for those who could not otherwise attend. He also pointed out that living expenses abroad are generally far below U.S. costs.
