Student Fathers Face Threat of New Draft Rules

Students who marry and have children while under a temporary draft deferment will not be eligible for permanents deferment, if President Eisenhower approves a new Selective Service proposal.

After a study of the draft situation, the Manpower Committee of the Office of Defense Mobilization has recommended modification of present Selective Service regulations concerning the status of student fathers. The plan would result in the early induction of about 20,000 fathers, draft officials predicted yesterday.

The Administration is also at present reported to be considering the possibility of a civil defense draft of both men and women. Val Peterson, civil defense administrator, stated, "I don't want to have to do it but I wouldn't hesitate to ask for a draft." He indicated that millions more than the four million present civil defense volunteers are needed.

Selective Services officials also announced yesterday that the Defense Department has issued an April call for 500 doctors and 145 dentists. In earlier draft developments, President Eisenhower has expressed emphatic opposition to a proposal to extend draft service from the present 24 mouths to 30 or even 36 months.
