Almost overlooked in Landy's mile effort was a fine winning performance by 20-year-old Graham Gibson in the 440-yard event. He won the race in 47.8 seconds, just 1.8 seconds off Herb McKinley's world record.

Gibson had been offered a scholarship at Yale University, effective three years from September. He is undecided at present and is seeking more details about the offer. --New York Times
