Square Post Office Service Faces Curtailment; To Lose Lease on Building Site September 1st

Complete curtailment of postal facilities in the Harvard Square area seemed a definite possibility yesterday when the City Planning Board revealed that the lease on the site of the present building expires next September.

Chances for continuation of service hinge on the sale of the city-owned parking let in Brattle Square to provide space for a new building but local merchants, are loudly protesting the proposal, claiming that any decrease in parking facilities would drive many of their customers to suburban shopping centers.

Mayer Joseph P. DeGuglielmo '28, and others favoring the sale pointed out at a public hearing yesterday that the loss of the post office would far outweigh the less of the 41 metered parking spaces which the let contains.
