Cliffe Changes Vote on Room Race Criteria

Questions on race and religion should not be included on roommate preference cards at Radcliffe, the Student Council recommended yesterday.

This decision reversed an earlier stand taken by the Council at its meeting last week, which recommended that each freshman be given a chance to state a preference as to the race and religion of her roommate.

Annex Deans Mary C. Moser and Mildred Pierce attended the meeting to present the Administration's view. "Such questions would exaggerate the problem: in effect, they say 'We expect prejudices, list them,'" Dean Moser said.

The Council, however, reaffirmed its statement to the Administration that Radcliffe should pursue a non-discriminatory policy in assigning freshman roommates.

Shared interests should be the only criteria for roommate assignments, the Council felt.

In a talk with Nancy Barrow '53, head of Student Government, President Wilbur K. Jordan said that the Council's opinion "would be seriously considered, but since college policy is involved, the decision rests with the whole Administration."
