Citizens' Commission Officer Attacks Velde For 'Irresponsible and False' Red Charges

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Rep. Harold Velde (R.-Ill.), who will lead a possible investigation of the University, was attacked last night as "a man who is conscienceless enough to use a deliberate lie."

Mrs. Eugene Meyer, official of the National Citizens' Commission for Public Schools, made the charge after Velde accused her of writing a pro-Soviet letter to the journal "Soviet Russia Today." Mrs. Meyer dug up a copy of the journal to prove the letter was written by another woman, a Canadian.

"This is the sort of reckless, irresponsible and false utterance that is going to be thrown at members of the teaching profession," Mrs. Meyer said.

Informed of the error, Velde refused to correct his statement.

The exchange followed a speech by Mrs. Meyer before 17,000 members of the Association of School Administrators, in which she denounced Velde, and called Sen. Joseph C. McCarthy (R.-Wis.) "our modern grand inquisitor." The speech was vigorously applauded by the delegates who were present at the convention.
