The absence of Bob Mello and a few lunches in the jumps spoiled the down full of another undefeated varsity team at Hanover Saturday, when an underdog Dartmouth track squad slipped by the Crimson 57 to 51.
Three firsts in the jumps and strength in the distances gave the surprised Indians a 52 to 51 lead as they came into the last event, the two-mile relay. Here, the Big Green's anchor man, Walt Clarkson, tipped the balance of the meet in Dartmouth's favor with a spectacular finish that won the race in 8:21.5.
Sweep Hurdles
Crimson strength was up to par in weights and short distances, with Bob Rittenburg, Bob Twitchell, and Bill Weber sweeping the 45-yard high hurdles and Horble Collins and Twitchell taking first and second in the dash. Bob Curran and Gil Murray placed first for the Crimson in the weight throw and shot put.
The Indians' captain, Mike Morissey, ran away with the individual mile and the 1000 yard run for the Green, while Clarkson took the two-mile run. Added to this, the Crimson's poor showing in the jumps made the difference.
The freshmen remained undefeated by crushing the Indians 131/2 to 331/2. The two-mile run was the only running event dropped by the Yardlings. Norm Bruck won the 50-yard dash in 5.6.
