The open hearing involving Wendell H. Furry, professor of Physics, scheduled by Senator McCarthy's investigating committee for a New York airing today, has been postponed until the first of the year, it was announced last night.
Possible espionage concerning Furry's work in the Signal Corps laboratories at Fort Monmouth; N.J., was supposed to be the topic of the investigation. McCarthy's current plan is to hold Furry's hearing in Boston along with the "sizeable number of persons" he intends to subpoena from "Project Lincoln" of Cambridge, the super-secret air force center, dealing with U.S. radur defenses.
Hyam G. Yamins, Newton scientist suspected of espionage, who was also to appear either today or tomorrow is the open hearing, has also had his questioning deferred until the Boston heaving.
The Senator also said he had accepted an invitation from Lawrence Spivak, moderator of a television debate program, to argue "the big issue" with Furry on television. Mrs. Furry answered last night that her husband was out of town and knew nothing of the debate proposal.
McCarthy said the reason for the postponement was that "it would cost a fortune to handle it any differently."
Meanwhile, McCarthy continued his attacks on Harvard during the investigations now being conducted in New York. When a school teacher invoked the Fifth Amendment after being asked if she were a Red spy, McCarthy labeled her as "another candidate for Harvard."
