The Yale varsity football team elected guard Thorne Shugart '55 of Los Angeles as captain for the 1954 season. Shugart succeeds Joe Fortunato as team captain.

Shugart, a dean's list student, was an outstanding lineman on a line ranked at midseason at the nation's top defensive unit.

A fullback in high school, Shugart shifted to the line as a freshman. He was a regular guard on the squad that season, and has played varsity ball for the last two years.
