Georgia Threatens to End Support of Paper

The Georgia State Board of Regents has threatened to withdraw state funds from the University of Georgia student newspaper if the student editors continued attacking racial segregation in the school system.

The Paper, "The Red and Black," has printed several editorials condemning segregation of Negroes in Georgia schools. Several warnings by Georgia University authorities went unheeded during the paper's campaign.

Roy V. Harris, Chairman of the Board of Regents, warned that the Regents would no longer make up the customary two-thirds deficit in the paper's annual $15,000 operating budget if this went on. Without state aid, the Red and Black would be forced to discontinue publication.

One Negro student has applied for admission to the University of Georgia, and his case is waiting court action.
