As the season of House athletics draws to a close, the league leading teams are battling for the privilege of representing Harvard's House system at Yale. The winning teams from Yale Colleges will play Harvard this weekend.
Four House teams remain unbeaten as the competition moves into its final two days. The number must be reduced to three this afternoon and may drop further by tomorrow.
Lowell and Leverett are tied for the lead in the soccer loop. Each has won five, lost none, and tied one; but this dead-look will be broken when the two teams meet today at 3 p.m. on the House soccer field.
Last Thursday, Leverett beat Kirkland, the team that tied Lowell. Though the Deacons outplayed the Bunnies throughout most of the game, Leverett won, 1-0 in overtime.
In tackle football, Leverett extended its unbeaten string to six in edging Kirkland, 12-6, on Friday. The Deacons took the opening kickoff and ran their first play without a huddle. The strategem confused Leverett completely, and Kirkland went all the way for a touchdown.
The game ended with the ball on the Leverett two-yard line.
Leverett will play Winthrop (3-1-1) on Wednesday in the final defense of its perfect record.
Dunster defeated Dudley, 25-0, in other tackle action last week. The Funsters (5-1-0) will meet Adams (4-1-1) today to decide second place in the league.
The touch football power of Winthrop will defend an unbeaten record against Eliot today. The puritans downed Adams 48-24 last Thursday and defeated Leverett in a forfeit on Friday.
In other touch action this afternoon, Dunster will face Dudley, as the Funsters attempt to better their 5-1 record and insure their hold on second place.
Only the first place soccer and touch teams will travel to Yale this Friday.
All tackle teams, however, will play the Yale Colleges that match the Houses in league standings. Branford College is the Eli Champion.
The four freshman touch football league champions, operating under a new playoff system, determine today and tomorrow the Yard team which will travel to Yale this Friday.
Four leagues founded this year made necessary a two-day playoff, with Hollis meeting the American League champions, Stoughton (6-2), and Matthews North taking on Weld South (7-0-1), winners in the Southern League, at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon on the intramural fields.
Holding an 8-1 record and the National League crown, Hollis is rate even with Matthews North (8-0), the Northern League titlists, as favorites in today's contests.
Winners today will meet tomorrow afternoon for the Yard championship, but a victory today will probably ensure a trip to Yale.
The Freshman intramural Council, under the direction of Roger Pugh, will meet tonight to decide if both champion and runner-up will play Yale's champion and runner-up. In past years, whenever possible, the Council tried to send both first and second teams.
Pugh said last night, "If it's economically feasible, we'll send both teams, but it is all a matter of finances."
