University maids and janitors yesterday elected Francis J. McNamara president of the Employees Representative Association. McNamara beat his only opponent by over 150 votes.
The Weld Hall janitor received 280 votes to the 11 picked up by Robert Green of Stoughton Hall. In the contest for vice-president, Business School caretaker Thomas Greene won by 211 to 171 over Kenneth Slocum.
The election was a special one called to choose a successor to Mrs. Helen Maynard who resigned last month. Mrs. Maynard moved up from the vice-presidential spot last spring upon the resignation of Elwyn Wyman from the top position.
Commenting on his victory, McNamara observed last night that the strong turnout of over half the union's membership was by far the largest in any presidential contest for years.
"It shows that the people are really interested, regardless of the resignation of the last two presidents," he said.
"Competition is back and it's a healthy thing."
McNamara would say nothing about any plans he had for his term of office, which extends until the spring of 1955. A new vice-president will be elected next spring.
The union is now composed only of maids and janitors. Most of the other University mainainence employees are now in the AFL.
