The M.I.T. soccer game that could not be played on sunny Wednesday afternoon because of rain went on yesterday in a steady downpour.
The Crimson slipped and slid to a 2 to 1 triumph over the Engineers in mud which made a cannon ball out of the soccer ball and covered the players from head to foot by the time of the final gun.
Alex Haegler made both Crimson goals. The first was a second period penalty kick which oozed its way through the goalie's legs. The second was a sensational 30 foot shot after a pass from Marv Weiss. Haegler drove it high into the left corner of the cage to break a 1 to 1 deadlock, midway in the final quarter.
Heavy Ball Hampers Passing
The rain made it particularly difficult, for the Crimson wing halfbacks, Bob Dean and Rusty MacIntosh, both of whom wear glasses while playing. Dean accidentally assisted in the Tech goal. He was standing almost in the cage, misjudged a ball coming toward him, and deflected it in for the score.
Juan Rodriguez played a magnificent first half for the Crimson, but wrenched his knee and has to sit out the rest of the game. Hugh Sargent took his place for the second half, teaming with Charlie Platt, who played the entire game.
The ball was sodden and heavy, despite the fact that six different balls were used, and only the foolhardy went out of their way to head it.
