Varsity Scrimmages JV's, Defense Stressed in Drill

Coach Lloyd Jordan sent his squad through a long scrimmage yesterday afternoon. The first eleven played defense against the junior varsity version of the Dartmouth "I," while the second and third teams polished their offense against the freshmen:

Bob Hardy and Harvey Popell were back in pads yesterday, but Jordan decided to rest them one more day. Joe Conzelman took the quarterback spot again, while rangy junior Blair Clark handled the end chores. Also sitting out the afternoon drill was Bill Meigs, who was replaced by Jim Anthony at guard.

Dexter Lewis and Frank White alternated at wingback, while the medical staff treated Bob Cowles' bad shoulder. Cowles' participation Saturday is doubtful.

The Yardlings faced a backfield which included halfbacks Carroll Lowenstein and Dick Hoffman, fullback Brian Reynolds, and Conzelman at quarterback. Talking about the freshman showing Jordan said, "They tackled very well, and that's very important. We look at defense first." It probably wouldn't hurt his feelings any if freshman coach Bob Margarita developed another Meigs or two.

In regard to the season as a whole, Jordan said, "We have tried to get our defense established first, and will stress offense in future weeks."
