Bob Mathias, Olympic decathalon champion, yesterday received the Associated Press award for male "Athlete of the Year," but said that he felt Horace Ashenfelter's victory in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at Helsinki made the Penn State athlete more deserving of the honor.

Starting this December, Mathias added, his future will be in the hands of the United States Marine Corps.
