For the third straight year a Crimson squash player has won the University Club of New York Invitation Squash Racquets Tournament. Charlie Ufford went through the tournament without dropping a game. He topped Dick Squires of Williams in the finals, 15-8, 15-12, 15-9. Ufford and Squires were seeded first and second respectively.
Dave Watts, Crimson captain and second man, defeated Blair Murphy, first man at Yale, in the first round with scores of 6-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-6. But he lost to Squires in the semi-finals 15-10, 15-3 and 15-13.
Ufford gained the finals by defeating Dick Stewart of Trinity in the first round 16-14, 15-13, 15-3, and Yale's Bob Dewey in the semi-finals 15-9, 18-16, and 15-9.
Against Squires, Ufford played brilliantly, forcing errors with his hard, steady play. It was by far his best match of the tournament and as usual he had saved his best squash for his best opponent.
The victory makes him a heavy favorite to repeat his national intercollegiate championship since the competitors in the tournament were the top players in the country.
Two years ago Henry Foster won the tournament, and Ufford won it last year. This is the fifth time a Crimson player has won the tournament. Yale, Princeton, and Haverford have each won three times.
Wesleyan and Army will be here Thursday and Friday for varsity matches. The Cadets will provide the first indication of the varsity's chances at the national team championship.
