Crimson Enters 17 Men In K. of C. Track Meet

Seventeen Crimson track men will help open the 1953 Boston indoor track season tonight in the annual Knights of Columbus track meet at the Garden.

With a total of 20 Olympic track and field participants, five of them gold medal winners, and sundry other of the nation's top stars gathered in Boston, there is little likelihood of the Crimson entries picking up any individual medals.

Bob Mello, a three year letterman, has been an annual participant in the pole vault and stands a chance to pick up a third place in tonight's meet. Both Rev. Bob Richards and Don Laz, however, will be out to break the meet record with 15-foot vaults, while Mello will be aiming for 13 feet, 6 inches.

The Crimson's three entrants in the 50 yard dash, Norm Brown, Fred Smith, and Charlie Arena, stand little chance to get by their initial heats, although any one of them might surprise on a good night. Hurdler Tom Gates, a freshman along with Brown and Smith, is conceded little chance to do any scoring, while Bob Blake, another freshman, will have to clear close to five inches above his previous best to stay with the top-flight high-jump competition.

In the relay races, however, both the varsity and freshman mile contingents should make respectable showings. The varsity, in an race against Yale and probably two other foursomes, will be made up of last year's outstanding freshman group of Warren Little, Paul Grand, Bob Rittenberg, and Alan Howe. The Yardling mile relayers will be Ed Carter, Al Wills, Bob Morrison, and Dave Alpers.

A two mile relay group of Guido Perera, Dave ingle, Frank Nahigian, and Jack Richards is also entered.
