To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

I was very much interested to see the article about the possibility of Hawaii receiving statehood soon in the issue of January 6. I was, however, horrified to see such good reporting was completely snafued by the statement that "Hawaii was acquired by the United States as a result of the Spanish-American War." Hawaii became a territory by its own wishes. After the monarchy had been overthrown, the Island appealed to the United States for annexation and the treaty was signed in 1898. It was not until territorial from of government was set up. --David Nickerson '55
