Herschel C. Baker, associate professor of English, will take the rotating post of Chairman of the Department of English on July 1, Provost Buck announced yesterday. The faculty approved the appointment at their last meeting.
Baker replaces Bartlett J. Whiting, professor of English, who is finishing five years of chairmanship-the customary term. Baker is also Senior Tutor in Dunster House.
English 160, "Drama Since Ibsen," and Humanities 1, are his two present undergraduate courses. Next fall he will teach part of English 120. His field is intellectual history of the Renaissance.
Coming to Harvard as an assistant professor in 1946, Baker was promoted to associate three years later. He received his A.B. from Southern Methodist in 1935, and a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1939.
