Track Men Elect Sprinter Pete Curran New Captain

Peter F. Curran of Waukeska. Wisconsin and Adams House, was yesterday elected Captain of the varsity track team for the coming year. Goodwin Cooke '53 of New York and Winthrop House, was also named to succeeds Paul F. Cooper '52 as manager, and Martin M. Doctoroff '54 of Boston and Dunster House was chosen assistant manager. Doctoroff will automatically move up to become head manager in his senior year.

Curran, who was elected on the fifth ballot, earned his letter last year as a sprinter. Because of a badly pulled muscle however, he was sidelined this year for both the winter and spring seasons.

Two other managers were also named. Julian Kivowitz '54 of New York and Dunster House was named an associate manager, while Lawrence N. Fox '55 of Park Ridge New Jersey and Holworthy won the freshman managerial competition.

Cairns Most Improved

Dave Cairns was awarded the improvement prize at the annual track dinner last night in the Varsity Club. Cairns, the top Crimson miler for the past three years, was recognized for his outstanding improvement in the two mile. Cairns first ran the event in the Brown meet and finished with a time well over ten minutes. Last Saturday at West Point, the Crimson senior was clocked in 9:22, an unofficial Harvard record Attempts are now being made to have the H.A.A. officially accept the record.

Bob Twitchell, Pete, Dow, and Dirk Walecka were also recipients of improvement awards

The Westmore Willcox II citation for the man showing the most improvement in the quarter mile run was awarded to John Pachard. Pachard, a senior, ran a 49.3 440 in the Yale meet for his best time at Harvard

Bob Rittenberg received the McLaughlin Memorial Award for the freshman most closely resembling the line character exemplified by James McLaughlin '52.
