20-1 Odds Backfire on Two Students As Williams Hits Homer Wednesday

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Two undergraduates lost at least $350 when Ted Williams slammed a home run Wednesday, "Ted Williams Day."

The two, Gerald Alch '55 and Joseph H. Soble '54, had solicited bets at 20 to 1 odds in the Commuters' Center against Williams's hitting a homer in his last game before entering the Marines.

Many commuters placed bets, averaging about 50 cents each, under the generous odds. Few kept an accurate tally of the number of bets placed, but most reports indicate the total was somewhere between $350 and $500.

Unfortunately for Alch and Soble, Williams hit a homer in the seventh inning and won the game for the Red Sox.

Alch and Soble were rather confused last night about the current state of their finances. Said Alch: "We didn't lose." Said Soble: "I can't reveal anything."
