Nine Tops Huskies, 7-3, On Ward's Three-Hitter

Bob Ward's talents for making opposition batters look silly finally paid off yesterday, as the varsity baseball team thumped Northeasttern, 7 to 3, at Soldiers Field.

Ward, who lost a three hitter to Brown in his last full outing a week ago, again allowed only three hits. But this time, his teammates were able to collect eight hits, including a triple and two doubles, and the lanky righthander kept the Huskies completely in line all the way. He struck out nine, walked only four.

Second baseman Henry Young, who got four of the Crimson's eight hits, drive in Bennie Akillian with the game's first run, late in the second inning. Ralph Robinson's triple scored Ben Smith in the third and Robinson scored himself on a long fly by Russ Johnson, while a combination of two Husky errors and two Harvard hits in the fourth went for three runs, and a 6 to 0 Crimson lead.

Ward weakened slightly in the sixth, giving up a single to Northeastern's Dick Cox, who scored on a long double by centerfielder Frank McCabe. McCabe, however, was thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit on the throw-in. The Crimson got one more run in its half of the sixth, the Huskies two in the first half of the seventh, but Ward was never in any danger.

Harvard looked very much improved in both the hitting and fielding departments.
