Elia Kazan, noted stage and screen director, will deliver the second Theodore Spencer Memorial Foundation lecture at 4 p.m. today in Now Lecture Hall. His subject will be "Show Business and the Realities."
Kazan directed both the mage and screen productions of "A Streetcar Named Desire." He was awarded an Oscar" in 1947 for his direction of Gentleman's Agreement." Other screen plays he has directed include "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Viva Zapata."
A graduate of Williams, Kazan studied drama at Yale and began his dramatic career in 1932. He appeared in many stage plays, including "Waiting for Lefty" the "Golden Boy" and staged many others. Including "Skin of Our Teeth" and "One Touch of Venus."
Late in December, an invitation committee first asked Kazan to appear. Broadway and Hollywood commitments prevented him from setting a definite date, however, and Kazan declined the invitation with regret.
But in April, Harry T. Levin, professor of English and a member of the invitation committee announced that Kazan's schedule would permit him to appear.
