Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Two ex-major league stars, Stuffy McInnis and Jack Barry, both of whom played in the famous Philadelphia Athletic $100,000 infield and both of whom have since become college baseball coaches, will match managerial wits when Harvard and Holy Cross clash this afternoon.
Victors in their first five contests against Dartmouth, Brown, Colgate, Springfield and Seton Hall, Barry's Crusaders must be rated heavy favorites over the Crimson in today's contest. The home team has a record of three wins, four losses, and one tie.
In the last two years the rivalry between these two teams has grown increasingly intense. Holy Cross had swept through six seasons undefeated against Harvard before 1950, but that year lost twice. In last season's only game the Crusaders won a thrilling pitcher's duel, 1-0, behind the six-hit hurling of Jim O'Neill.
O'Neill, who this year has a record of three wins and no losses, is Barry's probable starter this afternoon. In the event that O'Neill is not used, the Crimson will face either Jack Monorgan, another right-hander with a record of one win and no losses, or Ron Terry, an untried sophomore southpaw.
Stuffy McInnis definitely plans to start right-handed sophomore John Arnold. Something of a dark horse in pre-season ratings, Arnold has seen action in two games. Against Boston University he pitched brilliantly for six innings in relief, giving up only two runs. Last Saturday he went the distance against Yale and won, 11-7.
Bob Ward, who finally hit his stride with a fine three-hit effort against Brown last Tuesday, will be available for relief.
McInnis will use Tim Wise at third base in place of Ray Maesaka. Wise got two hits against MIT Wednesday and fielded flawlessly. Either Bob Smith or Dick Clasby will start in centerfield.
The entire Crusader lineup consists of right-handed hitters, and if Barry uses a right-hander on the mound, McInnis will start Clasby. In case a left-handed pitcher opposes the Crimson, Smith will patrol centerfield. McInnis has insurance relief pitchers in Rufe Webb, Jack Donelan, and Pat Groper.
