Mikkola Not Likely to Coach Track

Jaskko Mikkola, one of the most experienced track coaches in the country, may not be able to be with his team this spring. Dr. Andrew W. Contratto, instructor in Medicine and the attending physician, said yesterday that the head coach will probably be unable to take up his duties this spring because of his coronary condition.

Mikkola was still on the danger list at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital last night following Saturday's heart attack. Contratto said that Mikkola was better, but was dejected about missing valuable time with his team.

For the present, freshman track coach Bill McCurdy, who will replace the retiring Mikkola next year, will handle all the coaching duties with the assistance of his varsity and freshman captains, Bill Geick and Alan Howe.

Thomas D. Bolles, Director of Athletics, said yesterday that he has not yet received official word on Mikkola's status for the year. McCurdy said that it would be hard to tell the extent to which Mikkola would be sidelined.

There is always the possibility that Mikkola could plan the daily workouts from his bedside; he could aid McCurdy by frequent advisory telephone conversations ands intructions.
