Two gunmen driving a stolen car were splashed across the pavement on Memorial Drive in front of Leverett House at 1:45 a.m. this morning after a chase by police resulted in a thunderous wreck.
Both were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in extremely serious condition. One was unidentified; the other was identified as Leo Bergeron, 21, of South Boston.
A simple speeding violation was the downfall for the pair. Because of their excessive speed, a Metropolitan District police car began to chase them.
The 85-mile per hour pursuit became a life-and-death chase when, as the police car approached to issue a ticket, the passenger in the speeding car made a motion to pull out a gun.
As the cars hurtled past the Harvard Bridge below Dunster House, Patrolman Stronach in the squad car fired twice at the speeders to halt them.
