Dean A. R. Van cleave of little Piedmont College in Georgia resigned yesterday following a long dispute over the acceptance of money from the anti-Negro, anti-Jewish capitalist, George Armstrong.
The college dean stated at a faculty meeting. "I fear Fascism as much as I do Communism." His action threatened to split university faculty and student opinion again on an old question.
The incident at Piedmont came as the result of acceptance of funds from the Texas Education Association, which has been giving $500 monthly for more than a year to the school. Financier of the TEA is Armstrong, the wealthy Texas cattle and oil magnate whose money has been turned down by other institutions for his prejudiced views.
Van Cleave is the second faculty member to resign. A school trustee, Miss Josephine Wilkins quit last February over the TEA grants.
Alumni of the school since the TEA incident have voted "no confidence in school president James E. Walter."
