The varsity lacross team will start defending its 1951 New England League championship at 3:45 p.m. today, when it meets Tufts on the Business School field.
Pre-season predictions pointed to Yale or Dartmouth as the contenders for this year's crown; the Crimson was almost universally neglected. But a strong showing against the southern teams has restored Coach Bruce Munro's men to prominence as the League schedule opens the Crimson is rated a light choice to repeat.
Against Tufts, however, the varsity is definitely favored. The Jumbos won only three times last year, losing seven (including a 14 to 4 pasting by the Crimson). They don't appear to have improved much especially since Coach Tim Ring has been unable to find a capable goalie.
The attackmen are the standouts of the Jumbo squad. Co-captains Pete Ross and Al Bruns are the top scorers: both are fast with reasonably accurate shots.
Same Team That Beat B.L.C.
To counter this power, Munro will start the same defense which opened against the Boston Lacrosse Club last Saturday. Dick Thomas, a brilliant performer so far this year, will again be in the goal, with Captain "Sailor" Jay Byrne and Bill Spence two of his defensemen. Big Ned Maroni Paul Jones will share the other defense post.
The midfielders will be the same as against the B.L.C. Munro expressed pleasure with the play of Jim Telfer, currently filling in on the third midfield for the injured Bill Julian. The opening trio, though, will still consist of RonHuebach, Pete Brook and Chuck Baldwin.
High-scoring Moe Baldwin, Monk Aiello and Ned Yost will as usual form the Crimson attack.
In last Saturday's game, the Crimson beat B.L.C. 6 to 5, as Yost fired in the winning shot seconds before the end.
