Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Charlie Durakis, Bob Mello, and Pete Dow led the Crimson scorers to a 91 1/2 to 481/2 victory over Brown at Providence Saturday, but Bob Twitchell stole the spotlight with a brilliant 21-second 220 performance. The freshmen also romped over the Brown yardlings, 92 to 31.
Twitchell, who had to forego his hurdle specialties due to an injured foot, broke the Harvard and Brown stadium track records with his 21 second clocking, but both records were discounted because of a favoring wind. Dow, winner of the 100 in the good time of 9.9, was only a foot behind Twitchell at the 220 finish.
Durakis led the Crimson scorers with ten points on firsts in both hurdle races, while Mello easily won the pole vault at 13 feet and was a close second to Captain Bill Geick in the broad jump.
The 440 was the day's most exciting race, with the Bruins' Gene Whitlock coming off the far turn to catch Ed Grutzner in the stretch. Grutzner pulled up near the finish but was just held off by the tiring Whitlock.
Brown's Bill Reed came up on the last turn to edge John Packard in the 880 after letting the Bruin's star distance runner. Walt Molineux, tie him in the mile
Bob Rittenberg scored 18 points in the freshman meet with firsts in both hurdles races and the broad jump, and a second in the high jump. Alan Howe picked up ten points with close firsts in the quarter and 220. The freshman captain had to strain to hold off yardling Paul Grand in the 440.
