Jaakko Mikkola will miss the opening of a spring track season, for the first time in 32 years.
Bill McCurdy, who wasn't scheduled to assume coaching until next year, will take over for the alling Mikkola in today's opener against Brown at Providence. The freshmen will also compete against the Bruin yearlings.
The varsity will be favored in today's meet: Brown has several individual stars but appears to lack sufficient depth to upset the visitors. The Crimson, although also somewhat lacking depth, has a few more sure winners than the Bruina and a good many other capable men to pick up the seconds and thirds.
Charlie Durakis in the hurdles, Pete Dow, Captain Bill Geick in sprints, and Ed Grutzner, Ronnie Berman, Hugh Maguire, Dave Cairna, Dave Gregory, and Hal Gerry in the longer races are all probable scorers in the running events Top hurdler Bob Twitchell has a slight injury and may not compete.
Field Events Weaker
The field events appear considerably weaker. Dick Barwise won't compete in the high jump, and the discus, javelin, and hammer are of questionable strength. Brown has strong men in the shot and hammer and should be able to score heavily in these events. Bob Mello, however, won't have much competition in the pole vault and should be able to combine with Gelck for the first two places in the broad jump.
The Yardlings, led by Bob Rittenberg. Alan Howe, Paul Grand, Warren Little, Dudley Uphoff, and Dave ingle, will also be favored.
