Soc. Rel. Is First Field To Revise Tutorial Plan

Change Meets Requirements Of New House Dean System's Program Starts Next Tem

By Malcolm D. Rivkin

Announcement yesterday of major revisions in its tutorial policy for next year made the Social Relations Department the first to change its system to conform to the House Dean plan.

Head Tutor Joseph A. Kahl said that the new measures were taken as a result of the recommendation by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences that the five largest departments, Economics, English, History, Government, and Social Relations, adopt a tutorial-for-all program. The other departments are expecting to announce their changes before reading period.

Starting next term, Khal said, all sophomore tutorial will be held in the individual Houses and the Dudley Commuters Cewnter with the resident Social Relations instructor as tutor.

In addition, the former system of allowing sophomores to choose whatever subject they wanted to study will be discontinued. From now no, every tutorial group will be under the same program of study with the same list of requited readings.

Kahl said that the new system will enable students to read entire books and give a hackground for advanced courses in the field and general examinations.

"There tends to be a confusion and difficulty in finding something to interest everyone. We found it best to have a standard set of books for each group."

Junior tutorial, he continued, will probably not be centered in the Houses. Due to the fact that men usually choose their special field of interest by their junior year, the student will still be allowed to select his own subject and tutor.

"Consequently it is much more difficult to make sure that there will be enough students in each Houses to have a specialized group within the House.

But the student under the sophomore program when he is a junior or senior will at least have a relationship with the tutor in his House and be able to talk to him about his work."

Kahl also said that Radcliffe students will probably have their own program of sophomore tutorial, and that the system of individual work for seniors honors candidates will remain the same.
