Brown Man Gets New McKay Chair

Following the suggestion of Dr. Vannevar Bush, Provost Buck yesterday announced the appointment of Dr. George F. Carrier as George McKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering. This is the first of several such positions.

Bush was head of a panel which recommended the development of applied science and engineering under the bequest of McKay.

Carrier will teach a course open to graduates and advanced undergraduates on "Strength of Materials." He will also do work in applied mechanics, especially fundamental problems in elasticity and fluid mechanics.

A graduate of Cornell in 1939, he received his Ph.D. in 1944 and worked at Harvard as a research associate from 1944 to 1945. He then was appointed as an Assistant Professor at Brown, an Associate Professor in 1947, and a Professor in 1948.

Because of his activities at Brown, he will probably will not assume his post at Harvard until February 1, 1953.
