Yale's Calhoun College proved that the Eli swimming power extends even into its intramural teams when the Senators downed Eliot House by a score of 31 to 17 Saturday in the Payne Whitney Pool at New Haven.
The two intramural swimming championship teams batted evenly until the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay which decided the meet. The powerful Yale swimmers pulled out ahead in the last few laps to break Eliot's chance for a tie.
Plinay Jewell of Eliot was the big scorer, earning more than half of the Elephants' points. He took first in the 50-yard freestyle and closed quickly to tie for first in the 100-yard freestyle event to pile up nine points.
Calhoun moved out in front in the individual medley relay at the start of the meet; the Elephants could never recover although they were always in the challenging position.
The only other first place winner for Eliot was sophomore Claude Hooton who won the 50-yard breaststroke even while teammate Fred Weymar took third Pete Bradley of the Elephants took third in the backstroke to round out the Eliot scoring. There was no dive event.
