Publication of a 1000-page monumental work on Higher Education and American Business, compiled by 13 outstanding educators and business men is scheduled for next fall, Provost Buck announced yesterday.
The Provost is a member of the Commission on Financing Higher Education which expects to climax over three years of work on the volume in June.
Main theses of the book will be the conditions of all types of higher education in this country--liberal arts, technical, law, medical, etc.--and how business can further the cause of learning.
A preliminary pamphlet, published this month, begins, "higher education has made and is making a substantial contribution to the effectiveness, the skill, the growth, and the success of American business."
It continues, "business has recognized that there is a relationship of importance between industry and the hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the land."
The commission says that in the interest of business, a high standard of education must be maintained. It points out that all institutions are now having financial difficulties, and estimates that two hundred million dollars more are needed annually to support education. Without this added amount, the commission feels, higher learning "can be hurt badly."
It goes on to explain that government support would destroy the ideas of "diversity and competition in our American life."
"On behalf of higher education in America," the pamphlet states, "we ask the counsel, the understanding, and the assistance of American business."
