President Conant, in a speech in London yesterday, proposed "an academic alliance" between the leading universities of the United States and those of the English-speaking nations of the British Commonwealth. Conant addressed a luncheon of the Pilgrims, an Anglo-American friendship organization.
"The two capital cities of Great Britain and the United States, would be the focus of an ellipse on which would be placed the 75 to 100 academic centers which as universities serve the English-speaking nations throughout the world," he suggested.
Conant claimed that if a community of understanding among university scholars and administrators could be developed, "one more massive stone would be placed in the foundation of good British-American relations."
Freer movement of individuals within the elliptical area and simplification of the now complex affairs of money and banking would have to be achieved before such an alliance could be realized, Conant concluded.
